Why WIN Reality’s Austin build was hard

WIN Reality puts hitters inside virtual reality to train against real pitching. Building that product meant standing up a research and development team in Austin across engineering and product, in one place, against a roadmap that was already moving.

Two things make that harder than a headcount plan suggests. The first is that the team had to be located. Tying a technical search to a single city removes the remote pool that most software hiring quietly leans on, and it removes it before the first outreach goes out rather than at the offer stage. The second is that engineering and product were being hired at once into a team that did not exist yet, so each hire changed what the next one needed to be. Sequenced separately, those searches drift apart and the team arrives as a set of individuals rather than a group.

Internal recruiting capacity was limited, so the hiring load landed on the same people who were building. That is the failure mode this kind of build-out usually hits. Searches stall between sprints, strong candidates in a competitive local market take other offers while the loop resets, and the team ends up hiring whoever is still available rather than whoever was best.
